October is Sexual Violence Awareness Month

The theme for 2017 is CONSENT.

In the late 1990s many sexual assault services in Queensland started to identify October as a month to raise awareness about sexual violence in our community.  In 2002, the then premier of Queensland, Peter Beattie, officially pronounced October as Sexual Violence Awareness Month, or SVAM, in Queensland.

Sexual Violence Awareness Month aims to:

  • Raise awareness about this issue and to encourage people to work towards the elimination of all forms of sexual violence.
  • Promote the support options available to people affected by sexual assault and sexual abuse, and
  • Uphold a clear message that sexual violence will not be tolerated in our communities
  • Honour many strong and brave survivors of sexual violence

There are many activities and events throughout the state if you are interested, for more info:

One easy way you can be part of this month is to wear a TEAL RIBBON.  By wearing a ribbon you are showing your support for the elimination of sexual violence and the need for the whole community to take a stand against its presence.

This project was proudly supported by Brisbane City Council.

Brisbane North Side Counselling and Support

If sexual violence has been present at anytime in your life and you think you might like to talk with someone, then perhaps it would help to meet and have a chat with us.

Zig Zag continues to go to the north side and has appointments at the Zillmere Community Centre once a fortnight on a Monday. If it is easier for you to get to the North side rather than Camp Hill then contact us to make a time for Zillmere.

We work with survivors of sexual violence and support young women aged 12-25 years of age.

Monday afternoons (fortnightly) from 1pm, beginning March 3rd 2014.
